Background & experience

A career in financial services: strategy, (finance) operations and software development

36 years of experience in financial services (line management and consultancy) and in the software sector serving the financial services industry. This combination of experience is rare — and exactly what many challenges require.

Christoffel van Riet, founder of Van Riet Advisory

Two worlds, one perspective

My career has unfolded where insurance and pensions meet the technology that keeps these sectors running. I have sat on both sides of the table: as the client who needed a system, and as the vendor who built and implemented it.

I work across financial services broadly, with a particular affinity for pensions and insurance and the software sector that serves this industry. That mix makes my advice practical: I know not only what should happen, but also what it takes to really get it done.

In June 2026 I was once again positively assessed for integrity and suitability for advisory work in the financial sector.

International

Worked across Europe

Projects and assignments have taken me across much of the continent — mainly the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece, and many other countries besides. Different markets, rules and cultures, always with the same core.

This has given me deep insight into cultural differences between countries and into corporate cultures within organisations. Informed by Hofstede & Hofstede, Lencioni, Barrett, Covey and many other authors, I have developed my own view on national versus corporate culture and how to influence them.
